INDIA INDEPENDENCE DAY 2007 - Govinda Rajan

Residents of East Brunswick,New Jersey who are sixty years or older are admitted to East Brunswick Senior Center as members, on application. When Republic of India reached the age of 60 on August 15, 2007 ( having received independence from British on August 15, 1947) Ms. Rizpah Corley, an Executive Committee Member of the Center thought it is right time to admit India into the Center and celebrate the Indian Independence Day in a befitting manner. Her proposal to celebrate the day by conducting a dance recital and distributing Indian home made desserts was accepted by Mrs.Rachel Steinberg, the Director.

Rohit Baxi, Founder of Satrangi School of Fusion, Woodbridge readily consented to give a performance without compensation. The function started by singing the 'Star Spangled Banner' by the students and 'Jana Gana Mana' - the Indian National Anthem

The hour long performance by 23 young artists from the dance school was superb. Baxi said that the students were excited to entertain the seniors and it involved three weeks of intense rehearsal and the parents also cooperated by dropping them and picking them up for the rehearsals in spite of their busy schedules.

The members enjoyed the performance and they were spell bound. They also enjoyed the home made desserts brought by the Indian members. We are looking forward the second annual celebration of Indian Independence Day on Friday, August 15, 2008. India Association of Garden State have kindly consented to perform dance recital.
