Senior Center, East Brunswick NJ - Hira Beltangdi

I have been a member of the East Brunswick Senior Center for the last fifteen years. Every day, I look forward to go to the Senior Center. This is a home away from home for seniors. Especially for seniors who reside alone, this is a boon. They share their feelings with fellow members.

It is the place where you can go everyday and meet your friends. Early in the morning you call the center for transportation. Isn't it great! At the same time, you order your lunch which is served at subsidized rate. When you arrive at the center in the morning, you have coffee or tea and snacks.

There are many activities to participate. You may play Bingo or play cards. Some play mahjong. Once a week, the discussion group 'Memory Matters' meets to share their thoughts. We also have Arts and Crafts class. There is also a Stitch and Sew class once a week. Our products are sold in Craft Bazaar, a fund raising event in November and the proceeds go to the Center.

Transportation is also provided to go to grocery shopping and banking. Special trips are arranged to Atlantic City and to attend various events and shows.

Attending the craft workshop is a wonderful experience. Members of the craft workshop celebrate birthdays of their fellow members every month. My birthday was in April. When I attended the class on that day, Plates and Cups were ready. Several greeting cards and gifts were waiting for me. I was overwhelmed by their affection and recited the following poem:

We are a group of ten
All try hard to reach the goal attain
All work with their golden fingers
Who made craft bazaar successful for years?
All are in 70s, 80s and 90s you know
Some one's leg is hurting
Some one's chest is aching
But the faces are smiling
