Senior Center, East Brunswick NJ - Padma Shah

The East Brunswick Senior Center has helped me in many ways. I joined the Senior Center of East Brunswick more than ten years ago. My days and life are structured. It has brought discipline in my every day living.

I rise early around 6 a.m. to do my exercises, my prayer beads, arrange the room by making my bed and putting clothes away. Then I have a cup of tea and medicines. Around 8.30 a.m., I have a light breakfast, and by 9.30 a.m. I am ready to be picked up by senior transport. The bus comes between 9.45 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. We reach the center around 10.30 a.m. It is like arriving at home. All are friends here, there are no strangers. I greet them and settle down at our usual table.

Once a week, we have talks which are very informative and interesting. I have joined a couple of discussion groups. One of them is 'Lets Talk', which I find to be fun. The group is very friendly and discussions are extremely interesting. The other group is 'Memory Matters'. It really helps to improve your memory. We enjoy ourselves in this group too.

There are many other activities like exercise, crafts and card games. Three times a week I play Bingo. Our Bingo group is very friendly and I really enjoy that. At lunch time, a few of us who are vegetarian Indians sit together and share our food, so it is like having a picnic every day.

The biggest advantage of the Center is the Public Library next door. This is very convenient, as I love to read. I feel very independent because I can go on my own whenever I want and browse through books.

Joining the Senior Center is the best thing in my later life. It helps me keep active and alert.
